Chronic pain patient died after abrupt stop of medication

We have been informed from a very reliable source that a local provider abruptly ended the long-term pain medicine of a patient who had a chronic heart condition.

The patient went into cardiac dysrhythmia and died.

Did the abrupt termination of the pain medication cause it?

VERY LIKELY.

According to the source, the patient had done nothing to warrant the sudden stoppage of the pain medication.

The provider just didn't want to write the prescription anymore.

Such lack of concern for the patient's well being is something that is seen too often in Douglas County.

Despite the fact that the 2022 CDC Guidelines state that clinics, hospitals, insurance companies, and coordinated care plans should NOT be rewarding providers for ending opioid prescriptions, many are doing so making it enticing for providers who are more concerned about making money than helping patients improve or maintain the quality of their lives.
